Demystifying NDIS SIL Funding: A Step-by-Step Guide for Families
If you’re supporting a loved one with a disability and trying to navigate the NDIS maze, I want you to know, I get it. I’m not just writing this blog as a marketing manager in the disability support space. I’m also someone who’s on the NDIS myself.
I know how overwhelming it can feel when you first come across terms like “SIL”, “Rosters of Care”, or “Supported Accommodation”. But the truth is, Supported Independent Living (SIL) can be life-changing once you understand what it actually is, and how to access it.
So, let me break it down for you;
What Is SIL?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of NDIS funding that helps people with higher daily support needs live as independently as possible — usually in a shared home environment with other participants and regular support staff.
A Key Thing To Note:
SIL funds the support workers, not the house itself.
Rent, food, and other day-to-day costs are separate (and often covered by your DSP or rental assistance).
SIL supports usually include:
• Help with personal care (showering, grooming, dressing)
• Meal prep and nutrition support
• Medication prompts
• Daily living skills like budgeting, shopping, and routines
• Overnight support (active or sleepover shifts)
A message from me to you: A lot of people think SIL is just for people with complex needs but really, it’s about consistency and routine for those who need it every day to live well.
Step 1: Is SIL the Right Fit?
SIL is designed for NDIS participants who:
• Require 24/7 or regular daily support
• Need shared or individualised support throughout the day or overnight
• Are ready (or want) to move out of their family home or residential care
• Want to live in a supported home with others (or solo with 1:1 support)
It’s not suitable for everyone. If your loved one only needs a few hours of help each day or week, they’re more likely to receive In-Home Support (sometimes called Drop-In Support) instead of SIL.
❌ Common myth: “If you have NDIS, you automatically get SIL.”
✅ Reality: SIL is assessed separately and based on individual support needs and goals.
Step 2: Getting Assessed for SIL
If SIL sounds like a good fit, the next step is gathering the right reports to prove that it’s “reasonable and necessary”.
What’s usually needed:
• A Home and Living Supports Assessment from an Occupational Therapist (OT).
• A letter or report from a Psychologist, Behaviour Practitioner, or GP (if applicable)
• A Home & Living Supports Request Form
• Sometimes a Housing Goal clearly written into the NDIS plan
These reports should outline how the disability and any associated health or behavioral needs impact the person's ability to live independently and why SIL is the best support option.
These documents explain the person’s:
• Daily support needs
• Current living situation
• Safety concerns (if any)
• Goals for independent living
• Why SIL is the most appropriate option (vs in-home support, ILO, etc.)
Step 3: Submitting to the NDIS
Once you’ve got all your documents, your Support Coordinator can help you submit them to the NDIS as part of a Home and Living supports request or plan review.
The NDIA will look at:
• The level of daily support needed
• Existing informal supports (e.g. family carers)
• Functional capacity
• Whether the goals align with SIL
• Any risks if the person continues in their current living situation
If approved, SIL funding will show up under “Core Supports – Assistance with Daily Life” in the person’s plan.
Please note: It can take time. SIL approvals aren’t instant, and sometimes NDIA requests more evidence. Stay in regular contact with your Support Coordinator during this stage.
Step 4: Finding the Right Provider
This is one of the biggest decisions, because not all SIL homes are created equal.
Here’s what to look for in a great provider:
• Matching housemates by personality, age, and needs
• Safe, clean, and comfortable living spaces
• Support workers who are trained, friendly, and consistent
• Flexibility with routines, meals, and household preferences
• A real focus on choice, dignity, and independence, not just filling a bed
At Santi Support Services, we don’t just look at rosters. We look at relationships. Because feeling safe and seen at home is what makes SIL work long-term.
❤️ From Me to You: As someone on the NDIS myself - I understand how emotional and confusing this system can be. SIL isn’t just about “moving out” or ticking a box. It’s about finding the right environment for someone to build their independence, feel supported, and live with purpose - at their pace. If you’re feeling lost or stuck in the process, you’re not alone. The best thing you can do is ask questions, advocate fiercely, and partner with providers who truly listen.
